Alice B. Terry Elementary School was built in 1958 to handle
the growth from housing construction in the town of Sheridan
that was caused by Martin Marietta. The school was named for
Alice Bodine Terry
who was born in 1899. After several stints in one room schools,
Alice Bodine came to Fort Logan in 1932. Her first assignment
was as a teacher for a fifth and sixth grade combination.
In 1938 she became principal, saying, this was the greatest
challenge of her life. (Hidden Heroine, by Girl Scout Junior
Troop #177, Mountain Shadows, pg 2) She served as superintendent
her final year [1960-61]. In 1973 the park bordering Alice
B Terry elementary was named in her honor.
Alice Terry Elementary School was built as part of the Fort
Logan School Distirct. In February, 1962 the City of Denver adopted
an ordinance annexing the College View area. College View Elementary
School District was one of the three districts which made up
the Sheridan Union School District #2. The other two districts
were Fort Logan and Petersburg. Alice Terry Elementary became
part of the new Sheridan School District No. 2 from the consolidation
of the elementary and union districts. The election for the consolidation
was held on December 4, 1962.
Further narrative history for the elementary school is pending.
