Picture of Jeffrey MartinezJeffrey "Jeff" A. Martinez was sworn in as the Chief on October 12, 2020. Chief Martinez brings twenty-five years of experience to the Sheridan Police Department. Chief Martinez most recently served as the Commander of the Denver Homeland Security Bureau with the Denver Police Department.

He began his career with the Denver Police Department in 1995 and started his patrol duties as an officer in Southwest Denver in 1996. During his time with the Denver Police Department, he served as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Corporal, Patrol Sergeant, Internal Affairs Bureau Investigations Sergeant, Gang Bureau Shift Commander, Training Bureau Assistant Director, District 4 Sector Lieutenant, and Commander of District 5, District 1 and the newly created Homeland Security Bureau of DPD. Chief Martinez is widely respected by his peers in law enforcement, Denver city officials, and members of the community. His entire career has been dedicated to connecting with the community he serves by reaching out and working with neighborhood groups, church leaders, business groups, and city agencies.

Jeff has received numerous commendations including the Denver Police Department’s most prestigious award, The Medal of Honor. He was also awarded two Superior Tactics and Response Awards (STAR), 7 Official Commendations, 4 Commendatory Letters, a Commendatory Action Report, 2 Chief’s Unit Citations, and 75 letters of appreciation from citizens and department members. He is a recipient of the Bill Daniels “True Blue Award” in 2015 for volunteering with other officers who cleaned up and repaired code violations in the yard of a struggling Vietnam veteran in Denver. He also received the Citizens Appreciate Police (CAP) Award for a program he started with community members to provide suits collected from Denver officers to support individuals coming out of incarceration. He was also a long-time member of the DPD Peer Support Program. Jeff is a former Board member of Denver Inner City Parrish, the Colorado Latino Forum, Denver Police Protective Association, the National Latino Police Officers’ Association, and a Founding Father of Latino’s Impacting our Future Together (LIFT) philanthropy group. He is a recipient of a Denver City Council Proclamation recognizing his commitment to the Denver community, as well as a City and County of Denver Proclamation from Mayor Michael Hancock recognizing October 5, 2020 as Commander Jeffrey A. Martinez Day.

Chief Martinez is a third generation Colorado native and grew up in the College View area and graduated from Lincoln High School in Denver. As a working adult he also attained his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, and an Undergraduate Certificate in Criminal Justice management from the University of Phoenix. He is also a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) Senior Management Institute of Police (SMIP), The Latino Leadership Institute at Denver University, and The Leadership Denver Program. He resides in a Denver neighborhood directly next to Sheridan, so he has intimate knowledge of the city and the history of Sheridan.
