City Hall Tower Clock in Sheridan, Colorado

New: July 26, 2025.

City Hall Tower Clock

In a scenario straight out of Hill Valley in "Back to the Future." The original tower clock was installed in 1987 when the city hall was built. No one remembers when or why it stopped working. It had not worked for about three decades.

The issue of the clock not working has been discussed many times over the years. But the city never had enough money to repair or replace the clock. With the prosperity of the city over recent years money was no longer an issue. Plans had been underway for months to replace the clock. The search for a replacement was spearheaded by Police Chief Jeff Martinez. Utilizing his investigation and networking skills the Chief was able to locate a company to replace the clock. There are very few companies in the United States that could replace the clock. He found Tower Clocks USA a division of Bell Foundry Christoph in Charleston, South Carolina to replace the clock.

There was an opportunity at the time as Tower Clocks USA had a clock available in their existing inventory. It had originally been made for a city in Texas.. But that city had back out of the purchase. The clock was made by Tower Clocks USA while the internal mechanical mechanism was made in Belgium. The original retail cost of the clock was approximately $40,000 but Sheridan was able to obtain the clock with a significant discount at a price of $18,400. The cost included the installation of the clock. The city paid separately for the equipment rental for the installation of approximately $7,000..

A specialty crew was flown in from South Carolina to install the new clock. The crew was methodical and meticulous about their work. The removal of the old clock, preparation, and installation of the new clock took three days. The new clock weighs about seven hundred pounds and is nine and half feet in diameter. More than twice the diameter of the original clock.

The new clock has sixteen internal LED lights so the clock can be seen at night. The new clock became operational on July 2, 2025 at 11:11 am.
